In the third book in the Bloodlines series by Richelle Mead, Sydney Sage is questioning where her loyalties lie. She doesn't know what to believe, the lies that the Alchemists are telling her (lies she doesn't yet know are lies) or the far-fetched theories others are telling her. When we last read of Sydney Sage in the previous book, The Golden Lily, Sydney was determined to find Marcus Finch, a rebel and former Alchemist that now works against the Alchemists. He works with both humans and Moroi to eradicate Strigoi. This sounds good to Sydney. So good in fact, that she wants to ditch the Alchemists and beliefs she had instilled into her her entire life and ally herself with Marcus and leave the Alchemists for good.
Marcus gives her an offer, if she leaves with him to Mexico he can help her break her Alchemist tattoo- the golden lily on her cheek, and seal it so that she isn't susceptible to any more of the Alchemist's compulsion. Sydney considers this, leaving would mean that she could finally be free of the Alchemists, even if they do manage to catch her, she wouldn't need to worry- her to tattoo would be broken. However, going with Marcus also meant leaving all her friends behind. Leaving Adrian behind. Sydney has a lot to mull over.
