Movie News: The "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald" First Look Discussion

Before we dive into the first look discussion, I want to avert your attention to the post header image for a second. As you can see, the word "trailer" is crossed out and replaced by "first look". Well, that's because I initially thought that the anticipated date of November 18, 2017, would bring an official trailer for The Crimes of Grindelwald. Imagine my disappointment when I scoured the web for the said trailer and found a "first look" that merely consisted of the image below.

Of course, my first thought after seeing the image was, "How did the photographers get them poised for a photo, why aren't they trying to kill each other?" My second thought was, "this is the first look?" I was excited to have a picture of the assembled cast in character, but I expected more. I thought we would get a trailer, or at the very least, a teaser trailer. The following video is the poor excuse they had for a "first look".

In any case, I'll be discussing the contents the image the creators made us wait so long for. I'll examine each character and look for any hints or clues (though there doesn't seem to be many clues) Let's start with Albus: Jude Law makes for a great Albus Dumbledore, superficially. He's a good actor, so I think he'll portray the headmaster of Hogwarts quite nicely. As a sidenote, I'm loving that corduroy trench. Albus is wielding a wand that is not the Elder wand, and a quick scan through the image revealed that Grindelwald is, in fact, in possession of the said Deathly Hallow, but we'll get to that later on. The collective wands that the Wizards are holding in this picture are really smooth-looking compared to the ones the characters in the Harry Potter movies had. This likely holds no significance. Next, is...Credence? Didn't he combust in Fantastic Beasts after it was discovered that he was the Obscurial wreaking havoc in New York City? Ezra Miller's (the actor who plays him) appearance in the picture strongly suggests that he somehow survived. I wonder how big a role he'll play in the subsequent installments and what his part will be in the coming war. I don't know who the lady who seems to be cocooning Credence is, or who she could possibly be. Fourth is Zoë Kravitz's character, Leta Lestrange who is described on The Crimes of Grindelwald wiki page to be "quite complicated, damaged and confused lady...she's a kind of tragic figure". Leta was Newt Scamander's close friend, turned love-interest during their Hogwarts days. According to Newt, their relationship developed over a feeling of mutual isolation and seclusion. In other words, neither of them fit in in Hogwarts and so they became friends. Leta is now engaged to Newt's older brother, the war hero, Theseus Scamander who's arm Leta's is looped around.

I can't say much about him either, except that he was declared to be a war hero in Fantastic Beasts by one of the leaders of the wizarding world during an emergency meeting that was called to order and then interrupted by Porpentina (Tina) Goldstein, who is, incidentally, next on our list. Tina will probably play a fairly large role in TCOG. I say this because (and this is mere intuition) she is, presumably, Newt's love interest and side-kick. So, they'll probably stick together. Fans have speculated that Newt will be asked to assist Albus in his fight against Grindelwald, but after the occurrences in Fantastic Beasts, I would think Newt has good enough reason to go after the Big G himself. Jacob and Queenie are likely to continue being supporting characters that are essential to the story because they are an unlikely pair━a Witch and Muggle who are falling in love. Last, though certainly not least, is Grindelwald. Oh boy, where do I even begin? For starters, I never would have imagined young Grindelwald to look anything like Johnny Depp. I would peg him for a Jack Sparrow than a Grindelwald. That said though, he doesn't look bad, he just looks so...modern. What with his blue eye, spiked white-blond hair, and near knee-high boots. He looks out of place as if he happened to stumble upon the movie photoshoot, wouldn't leave when he was asked to until the photographers just gave in in exacerbation and included him in the shot, which explains why Jude, Dan, and Alison look at him strangely when the picture moves. Also, how is it that he's come to have the Elder Wand? In Deathly Hallows, we were told and shown that a very young Grindelwald stole it from Gregorivitch, but how can he have it? I have plenty of thoughts and largely debunkable theories for the next film, but I'll save those for the actual trailer discussion.
